Telecommunication companies, or telcos, withdrew their unlimited text with voice call offering after the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) denied their request for the suspension of the promo during the holidays.

In a letter dated December 10, Smart Communications Inc. informed the commission that it has abandoned their application to extend its Text and Call Combo Promo, Call Night Long Promo and Smartext 30 and Smart60 for Gold Lite Subscribers.

The Globe Telecom's Touch Mobile also withdrew its Unlimited Night Calls Promo.

Globe starts new Internet plans for Blackberry users

INQUIRER.net 12/18/2009 MANILA, Philippines—Spurring the market for Internet access on the Blackberry device, mobile telecommunications firm Globe Telecom introduced an unlimited Internet access on the Blackberry for postpaid users.

The prepaid service will be offered in three modes: P50 for 24 hours, P220 for five day days, and P1,200 for one month.

But the service does not include Internet browsing, which will be charged separately. For postpaid users, they will be charged 15 centavos per kilobyte while prepaid users will be charged P5 every15 minutes of usage.

My comment: seems very limitiing and expensive for just using email and social sites?? Smart offers unlimited surfing at 50 pesos a day.....which Globe is not doingin their P50 plan, you only get to surf limited social sites and email. Sun also has an unlimited surfing plan for 50 pesos a day.

just do a wipe on your handheld before inserting the prepaid globe to be sure to remove all service books. Then it will be provisioned to your new sim (IF this promo is really working that is)

as soon as your device is provisioned in the globe BIS then it will automatically be disconnected from the smart BIS, its like a change device. Then you can now create your globe bis address to be used to configure your push emails. problem occurs when there are service books left from your previous simcard. so to be safe just do a handheld wipe. upon provisioning, new service books will be automatically be downloaded to your device.

Globe Super150 Is BULLCRAP!

From a blogger on blogphilippines: SUPER150 is the latest promotion from Globe that allows Globe users (Globe Prepaid, Globe Tattoo or Globe Postpaid) unlimited calls and texts within the Globe network. Apparently, Globe’s Super150 was introduced to counter Smart’s Unlimited calls. While Smart sets a time frame for their subscribers to make unlimited calls (10pm to 6am), Globe was daring enough to offer unlimited calls and texts for 24 hours within a five day period from subscription. This alone gave enough reasons for my friends to move to Globe.

Lately however, I became increasingly frustrated because every time I avail of Globe’s Super150 and use it, I always encounter difficulties in placing calls and sending text messages. Right after subscribing to Globe’s Super150, I can easily make calls. Five hours later, redialing the number for the Nth time to make a successful call becomes pestering. So, like any curious Globe subscriber would do, I called 211 (Globe’s Customer Service) to inquire. Guess what? After asking my location, how I place calls and whether my phone is perfectly fine (which it is), the customer service representative didn’t give me any explanation. She simply offered to make a report about my problem and have their technical service department look into it. She suggested that I restart my cellphone then try calling again. I patiently did what the representative told me only to find out that it didn’t do any good.

I’m left with no other resort but to reload my phone and place in calls like usual (without the 238) and quite surprisingly, the call was successful. Was I cursed that I can’t place calls using the Super150 or was it just a bad day for me? I went ahead and asked 8 of my friends if they encountered any difficulties placing calls while they’re subscribed to Globe’s Super150 and they all said YES! Where does this leave us?

Cursing Globe for their BULLCRAP? Moving to another network?! Worst, suing Globe Network for the irregularities in their service? I could do all but I opted not. I opted to blog about their crappy service and share it to the rest of the world and hopefully, it gets to the attention of the Globe Executives. I hope Globe straighten this out, do whatever they need to do and make sure they keep their words. I’m not sure these Globe Executives know the basic principles in Marketing or even heard of the power of mouth, but let me tell them this anyway: your GLOBE SUPER150 IS A BULLCRAP AND I’M TELLING THE REST OF THE WORLD ABOUT IT. SMART & GLOBE new six-second pulse billing regime, how to do it

No wonder NTC is complaining, you need to add prefix number when dialing to call someone. The strange thing is per-pulse charging only applies when calling same network number or sister company’s number. The mobile networks is implementing it like a promo.

So for Globe and Touch Mobile users, following are the prefix numbers or format of digits to use the per-pulse charging:
232 — when calling a Globe number. Replace 0 with 232 plus the 10-digit globe number (e.g. 2329271234567)
803 — when calling a Touch Mobile number. Replace 0 with 232 plus the 10-digit globe number (e.g. 8039271234567)

Additional conditions lifted from their advisory site:
Per second rates when using the aforementioned dialing sequence as follows:
- P0.10/second for Globe-Globe/TM and TM-TM/Globe calls Monday to Saturday
- P0.05/second for Globe-Globe/TM and TM-TM/Globe calls Sunday
Minimum maintaining balance of P7.50 required for Globe, P6.50 required for TM.

lowering the cost of mobile phone calls

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile earlier today denounced telecom giants Globe and Smart, for continuing to defy the National Telecommunication Commission's new memorandum circular mandating telecommunications companies to start billing cellphone users on a "per pulse" basis.

"Globe and Smart are once again trying to flex their muscles, twisting the rules for their own benefit" Enrile blasts.

Enrile was reacting to advertisements placed by Globe on major broadsheets informing their subscribers to dial 232 plus the 10-digit cellphone number for Globe subscribers, and 803 plus the 10-digit cellphone number for Touch Mobile users.

"During the committee hearing at the Senate, Globe, Smart and Sun Cellular agreed to follow the new NTC ruling. Instead, I learned that Globe is treating this as a promo, requiring their subscribers to dial a certain number together with the cellphone number, for them to be billed on a "per pulse basis."

Enrile also deplored the fact that until today, Smart has not bothered to inform its subscribers of any change in their billing scheme as expected under the agreement between the telecommunications company and the NTC.

"They will be taken to task for this defiance. This is precisely the reason why I am pushing to strengthen the regulatory powers of the NTC. These Telcos cannot be allowed to manipulate the industry for their own benefit, they are fooling the people" asserted a visibly irked Enrile.

"The NTC should not be afraid to sanction these Telcos. What these Telcos are doing is a clear disregard for consumer welfare" Enrile explained.

Enrile further said that "these Telcos must be sanctioned immediately, and they will be required to show cause why their certificates of public convenience and necessity should not be suspended or revoked."

Enrile explained that prior to the announcement of the new rates, he, together with representatives of the three telecommunications companies and the NTC, ended the committee hearing last Dec. 3 with a gentleman's agreement, with everyone acknowledging that the new rates will in fact make for a healthy and competitive atmosphere that will benefit not just the consuming public, but the Telcos themselves.

"The Telcos keep on hiding behind the cloak of "technical difficulties", and this must end. Hanggang kailan na lang natin papayagan ang mga 'yan na magrason ng "technical difficulty" tuwing may pinapairal kaming batas na mapapakinabangan ng taong bayan"? Enrile asks.

"The law must be followed, otherwise we will all be slaves to the whims and fancies of these power-hungry companies. Kawawa naman ang taong bayan!" Enrile added.

Enrile commends Sun Cellular for being the first telecommunications company to comply with the new "per pulse" billing scheme.

Globe, Smart proposing different voice call rates vs NTC cutting rates

Manila Standard Today reports Major telecommunications companies are lobbying with the National Telecommunications Commission to approve their respective proposed rates on voice calls.

The NTC in July fixed the maximum unit of billing for voice services at six seconds per pulse with higher rates on the first two pulses to recover costs.
The telecom companies in September submitted their proposed rates based on their actual call set-up costs.

“Any further reduction in the proposed rates would affect Globe and Innove Communications Inc.’s ability to continue to provide voice service in accordance with the quality and coverage standards of [NTC],” Globe said.

Globe and subsidiary Innove proposed a flag-down rate ranging from P1.50 to P4 for the first six seconds and P0.70 to P1.25 for the succeeding pulse.

It said that majority or 63 percent of calls made by subscribers had an average duration of 27 seconds per call while 30 percent had 117 seconds, or about two minutes.

Globe said the average subscriber under its proposed rates would only be charged P4.75 per minute against the prevailing rate of P6.

My comment: Seeing that PLDT is offering international calls for P1.5 a nubyte and SUN P2 a minute international calls and Globe and SMART at P2.5 a minute, it seems that domestic calls are more expensive than international and in USA you can now call free on some domestic plans USA and Canada

Globe cuts overseas rates to stimulate demand

Saturday, 28 November 2009 Manila Times GLOBE Telecom Inc. on Friday said that it cut its international voice and text rates to major destinations to stimulate use ahead of the Christmas holiday.

In a statement, the Ayala-led telco said the regular call rate was brought down to as low as P2.50 to selected countries from P20 per minute.

Besides cheaper call rates, Globe said it also reduced its international short messaging service (SMS) rates to P5 per SMS to top 50 destinations. The promo is open to all Globe postpaid and prepaid, as well as to Touch Mobile subscribers.

”There is also no need to register, use access codes, or special cards to avail of the special ISMS rate,” Globe said.

Regular postpaid rate is P10 while regular Globe and TM prepaid rates are both P15.

Using Globe tipIDD card, customers can call the US, Hong Kong and Canada for only P2.50 per minute; Singapore, China, Malaysia, South Korea, and Taiwan for P5 per minute; Australia, Thailand, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Japan for P8 per minute; and Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates for P10 per minute.

The card can be used in Globe postpaid, prepaid, and TM mobile phones as well as in Globe postpaid and prepaid landlines.

Another product is the Globe IDD Suki load, which can be bought from autoload retailers.

P20 load is already equivalent to a five-minute call to the US, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan, while a P30 load provides three-minute calls to Saudi Arabia, UAE and Kuwait. The Philippine Star November 26, 2009 MANILA, Philippines - G-Xchange Inc. (GXI), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Globe Telecom, has underscored the importance of forging strong local and global alliances for small players to succeed in the e-commerce market.

GXI president Rizza Maniego-Eala said the multiplier effect is greater if the resources of a company are combined with others.

For instance, she said GXI, using its GCash mobile payment platform, has tied up with banks and local merchants for various services such as remittances, savings, loans, bills payments, among others. Such arrangement allows GCash to grow the market and also to expand sales force.

“For a business to develop, we have to follow a roadmap but it will not be possible if it is not aided by solid partnerships. Usually, the equation is one plus one equals two but with partnerships, one plus one equals three, four, or five. I think we cannot stress enough that when starting a business or growing one, partnerships are very important especially since the markets are going global,” Eala explained.

As a result of such tie-ups, GXI was able to build a robust e-commerce ecosystem using the GCash platform which allows it to use C2C (consumer-to-consumer), B2C (business-to-consumer) and B2B (business-to-business) applications. Thus, the GCash mobile wallet was transformed from being just a simple product, into a service that traverses many entities and revenue streams across the board, Eala said.

Globe allots more funds for broadband, wireless

TELECOMMUNICATIONS firm Globe Telecom Inc. is allocating more funds next year for its broadband and wireless businesses citing the growth opportunities in these areas as the mobile division peaks, top officials said on Monday. During a media briefing, chief financial officer Delfin Gonzalez said the company has budgeted $500 million for next year, roughly the same amount the firm plans to spend for full-year 2009.

"Our spending for mobile is going to be smaller than what we anticipate to spend for broadband," said president and chief executive officer Ernest L. Cu. He said for next year, the firm plans to spend 35 percent for the broadband business, 30 percent for the wireless services, among others.

"For mobile, we are not saying there is no growth. We are saying the growth has been tempered as the market nears maturity. But we still feel we can eke out growth.There are still people who can cross networks," he said.

For the first nine months of the year, the company had a subscriber base 23.13 million. Gonzalez said the firm may see this number grow further toward the end of the year, although he declined to provide further details.

Globe's broadband subscribers number at 517,000 for the first nine months, ahead of the firm's full-year guidance.

Service revenues for the first nine months of the year hit P47 billion, up 1 percent as mobile revenue losses were offset by broadband and fixed-line data, which grew 22 percent and 69 percent, respectively.

Mobile service revenues declined 2 percent to P40.38 billion in the first nine months.

The firm's profits in the January to September period rose 12 percent to P9.9 billion, including a one-off gain from equipment and exchange transaction. Globe Telecom also declared a special dividend of P50 per share.

They should all also start sending their bills by email notification so late or undelivered bills can be paid on a timely basis and it would save everyone problems. Meralco does it so nice now. And why not send an email to each customer when bill is paid automatically?

Globe bares 12% income growth to P9.9 billion in January-September

MANILA, Philippines - Globe Telecom reported a 12 percent growth in its net income to P9.9 billion for the first nine months of 2009 from P8.8 billion in the same period last year mainly due to an after tax gain of P398 million arising from an equipment exchange transaction coupled with the lower corporate tax rate of 30 percent starting 2009 compared to last year’s 35 percent.

Core net income, which excludes foreign exchange and mark-to-market gains and losses and non-recurring items, was steady at P9.4 billion.

Company officials reported that consolidated service revenues during the period was at P46.9 billion up one percent from last year’s P46.6 billion. Sustained topline growth was underpinned by the strong performance of the broadband and fixed-line data businesses which grew 69 percent and 22 percent, respectively, from last year, compensating for the lower revenues from the mobile and traditional landline segments.

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) for the first nine months stood at P27.6 billion, three percent below last year’s level, with EBITDA margin at 59 percent from 61 percent in 2008 as operating expenses and subsidy grew faster than revenues.

The mobile business ended the period with 23.1 million subscribers from 23.7 million last year.
Officials said Globe continues to churn out marginal subscribers acquired in earlier quarters and focused its acquisition drives towards better quality subscribers. This shift in acquisition focus has translated to some early gains, with its mass market brand TM demonstrating higher revenues and average revenue per user (ARPU) quarter-on-quarter despite a contraction in its SIM base.

“While competition remains intense, we believe that we have the right strategies to further improve the competitive position of our mobile business. We will strengthen our brand portfolio through innovative and affordable product offerings, resume the growth of our subscriber base through quality acquisitions, while continuing to upgrade and improve the robustness of our network,” Globe president and CEO Ernest Cu said.

Meanwhile, Globe’s broadband business continued to gain momentum as subscriber base grew almost three-fold to over half a million subscribers, beating full-year expectations.
All broadband products posted record quarterly net additions, with fully mobile Internet service Globe Broadband Tattoo leading the way.

The robust subscriber growth has translated to a revenue improvement of about P907 million or 69 percent from last year, closing the period with P2.2 billion in revenues.

“We are very pleased with the significant headway we have made in the broadband space. We will accelerate our broadband capacity build to capture the growing demand for the service, and to solidify the gains we have attained so far,” Cu added.

In line with its thrust to generate superior value for its shareholders and consistent with its goal of optimizing its capital structure, the company’s board of directors declared a special dividend of P50 per common share. A total of P6.6 billion in dividends will be paid out on Dec. 15, 2009 to stockholders of record on Nov. 20, 2009.
This would bring total dividends paid out this year to over P15 billion.
In addition, the board resolved to amend the company’s dividend policy by increasing the payout of regular dividends from 75 percent of net income to a range of 75 to 90 percent of prior year’s net income starting in 2010.
The special dividend and increase in regular payout are expected to bring the company’s capital structure to a more optimum level, in line with previously stated targets.

Capital expenditures stood at P19.6 billion as of the third quarter, 38 percent higher than the previous year as Globe sustained the expansion and upgrading of its broadband and mobile networks. Capex for the period also included amounts needed to expand the company’s corporate data networks, and carryover spend related to Globe’s participation in the TGN-IA international submarine cable facility.

Meanwhile, mobile service revenues, which comprise 86 percent of total service revenues, declined by two percent from last year’s level. Intense competition, growing multi-SIM usage, and the market’s increasing preference for bucket and unlimited offerings continued to put pressure on top-line performance. Cellphone Market to Return to Growth in Fourth Quarter

The global cellphone market is set to grow in the holiday sales-fuelled October-to-December quarter, after four quarters of falls, analysts said on Friday.

"We forecast handset shipments to grow 3 percent annually in Q4 2009, signalling an end to the recession," Neil Mawston, analyst with Strategy Analytics, said in a statement.
The mobile phone industry is ending its worst year ever, with top handset vendor Nokia forecasting earlier this month that 2009 market volumes would fall 7 percent from 2008, indicating a small rise in the fourth quarter.

Samsung, LG, Apple Win
The world's second and third-largest handset vendors, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, continued to win more share of the market, with sales rising 16 percent and 37 percent, respectively.

Surge in subscribers cripples Globe’s wireless broadband network

Globe Telecom Inc. said its network is “temporarily overwhelmed” by the upsurge in wireless Internet broadband subscribers caused by the price war among rival operators. Because the company slashed the price for the Globe Broadband Tattoo stick, the take up of its users grew “significantly,” causing the network to be crippled, Ernest Cu, the company’s president and chief executive, said.

Globe Tattoo’s retail price dropped from P1,895 to P895, while Smart Bro Prepaid kit now costs P995 and Sun Cellular’s Easy Broadband Plan is now only 799 a month.

Cu, however, said that Globe is remedying this by expanding its band with capacity to support the growing number of Globe Tattoo users.

The company’s prepaid wireless broadband subscribers grew 400 percent since it was launched in February.

“That’s good, but at the same time we have to adjust,” Menchi Orlina, Globe’s chief marketing officer, said.

”We are frontloading additional cell sites at the same time [with] other technological intervention that we are doing” would augment network capacity, she said.

Orlina said the poor Internet connection of Globe Tattoo is “definitely a major concern,” but “very soon, the network would be improved tremendously because of the intervention that we are doing.”

At end-June, Globe’s cumulative broadband subscribers more than doubled from 148,769 last year to 379,309 in the first semester of the year driven by the exceptional growth of Globe Broadband Tattoo.

Wireless broadband subscribers comprise 54 percent of total customers, up from 19 percent last year.
Revenues from the broadband business likewise have risen by 59 percent to P1.362 billion from P855 million in 2008.

During the first half of the year, the company’s profit grew 17 percent to P7.2 billion year-on-year, while its second-quarter earnings increased 16 percent to P3.25 billion.

Excluding nonrecurring items, the country’s second largest telco reported a 3-percent rise in core income to P6.9 billion in the first semester, but it declined by 2 percent to P3.2 billion in the second quarter. My comment: Globe bills online only show one month and you must already know the amount to access that even! SMART at least has three months billing available online.

And SMART bills are always late, I wonder why they even waste the money on a carrier (and printing envelopes and paper costing almost a million dollars a year I am sure?) when they just bought Meralco that does a wonderful job of emailing a bill to customers every month and makes the customer so happy as a result where he can pay ontime! Maybe PLDT and SMART should learn some things from Meralco hehe now that they own part of it.

My experience with SMART Bro has been excellent in Cebu but I am near the cell tower. In Manila, it has varied greatly sometimes average and sometimes never so slow I give up They have three different websites for emails, viewing your bills, and signing into your account all with separate logins, and passwords so complicated, its worse than bank passwords. And I wonder why they make customers sign into three separate sites for email, billing, and internet account instead of being under one login? And even yahoo logins are simpler passwords, make it simple someone once said but SMART doesnt seem to take this view in this case at least!

And Globe DSL has a built in auto disconnect every hour which disrupts your browsing and surfing, and disconnects your yahoo and downloads. Seems they should eliminate this as many blogs complain about the constant disconnects for Globe DSL! Or are they even interested in customer satisfaction hehe? But I am sure since many stock analysts and stockholders may read this, maybe they should be interested!

Globe’s service is part of its Internet-in-Schools-Program (ISP). Under the program, Globe will “provide free Internet for one year to serviceable public schools all over the country.” Those schools are serviced by the Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM), a unit of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Five other public schools in Zamboanga—J-Jireh School, Southcom National High School, Sinunuc ElementarySchool, Zamboanga City High School main campus and the Sinunuc National High School—will also receive free WiMax connection for a year, making them the first WiMax-connected schools in the Philippines.

Ticket to cyber highway

For Jojie Ilagan-Bian, president of the Philippine Call Center Alliance, WiMax is Zamboanga’s ticket to the cyber highway. Both Wi-Fi and WiMax can be used for wireless networking, but the latter is designed to allow higher data rates over longer distances. For example, a person using WiMax can stream videos and download a movie file at the same time. WiMax provides broadband wireless access of up to 50 kilometers for fixed stations, and 5 km to 15 km for mobile stations. In contrast, Wi-Fi is usually limited to only 100 meters.

“By investing heavily in expanding its information and communications services, Globe has not only expressed its confidence in the future of this city and this region, but has helped to create conditions under which other companies will be attracted to the city,” Bian said.

Globe’s Disuanco said the telco plans to open four more WiMax sites in the region.
“It is Globe’s aim that every home in Zamboanga be connected to the Internet,” he said. Telcos not ready to comply with NTC on extended expiry of vanishing load

TELECOMMUNICATIONS company executives indicated on Wednesday they are not yet ready to comply with Senate-initiated circulars issued by National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) extending the expiry dates of “vanishing” prepaid cellular-phone load and the ban on spam messages sent by telcos’ content providers to their subscribers.
“Of course, we were surprised. We are still trying to digest the impact of [the NTC circulars]. We would like to digest first the circulars and assess our options,” Smart Communications manager Roy Ibay told reporters after attending a Senate technical working group (TWG) meeting with other telco executives on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a legislator proposed on Wednesday that the NTC require mobile-phone firms to issue a “billing statement” through SMS or text messaging for every worth of cell-phone load consumed. Party-list Rep. Florencio Noel of An-Waray said that with this, cell- phone users would be informed on how their load was consumed and ensure transparency between the pre-paid subscribers and the cell-phone companies. “One possible way of holding cellular-telephone companies accountable for stolen loads would be to mandate them to issue ‘billing statement’,” Noel said

Also, he said that “text billing,” which should be sent free of charge, would be automatically generated when there’s only P5 worth of load remaining.

“But if they could monitor how much is your account balance or know if you have exceeded the ‘consumption date’, they could easily set up a system that would track down the volume and price of text messages and voice calls made,” he said.

Hoyle Raul E. Disuanco, Globe’s sales head for the Visayas and Mindanao, said at least 15 WiMax sites have been established and another four are the pipeline. Mayor Celso L. Lobregat said the WiMax would boost the city’s bid to become a hub for information and communications technology. Mr. Disuanco said WiMax is designed to enable the deployment of "fourth generation" wireless broadband access as a cost-efficient alternative to cable connections or and DSL, or digital service line. Globe reorganizes sales, marketing units

Industry observers say Globe needs to shift gears up in order to better compete with rivals. Coming up with more products and service offerings such as the Globe Duo and WiMax may not be enough to cope up with competition especially during tough times when consumer wallet is shrinking. “In other words, they have to deliver and generate more revenues or they will continue to be left behind,” said the sources.

Of late, Globe has been experiencing network glitches. The problem, the company claimed, is limited only to the 3G (third-generation) service that affected some parts of Makati, Manila and Pasay.

Irate Globe subscribers complained of difficulty in making calls, sharing load credits and delays in text messaging service.

Globe also relaunched its fully mobile broadband service branded as Globe Broadband Tattoo but some subscribers still complained of slow Internet connection.

My comment: Their DSL service has a terrible problem built in! It is programmed to disconnect your service at least every hour and then reconnecting, making downloads, yahoo chat, etc cut off, such an inconvenience. They should make their service more reliable and do a major shakeup to achieve customer satisfaction! The costs are reasonable for dsl but many online newsgroups complain about his auto disconnect problem!

How not to be No. 1

IT’S no secret that Globe Telecom Inc. wants to be number one. (read article mid column in link)

Then and now, Globe has always had problems with its after-sales service—or follow-up care for loyal customers needs to be given priority, a reform one hopes would be part of the improvements now ongoing under Mr. Cu’s helm.

Consider the Globe DSL subscribers in Mandaluyong, San Juan, and Pasig. Since mid-June, they’ve had intermittent service due to system repairs and nobody in Globe seems to know when these repairs will be completed.

Worse, Globe’s monthly billings do not reflect the interrupted service (read: subscribers are charged the same monthly amount regardless of service disruption).

The worst part is the vaunted hotline. More often than not, it’s a computer-generated message that answers the caller. If an irate subscriber does finally get in touch with another person (and has not banged the phone after listening endlessly to the company jingle), some 15 minutes plus have passed, enough to order a take-out burger meal and have it delivered.

Hey, don’t take my word for it. Maybe Globe executives could check out the hotline, using a pay phone instead of their executive phones. Maybe, they should check how many days in June Globe was actually servicing subscribers in Mandaluyong, San Juan, and Pasig and then check whether, as a responsible company, it deducted from the aggravated subscribers’ monthly billings the periods of disruption (read: no deductions so far).

The cell phone companies have been a pampered lot. They are some of the most profitable business operations. Yes, they put in big bucks when they started. But they recovered their investments very quickly.

Globe has done a major website overhaul. The site shed it's old school Internet look and now has that flashy colorful young feel. Looks more like a cool gadget magazine in my opinion. The only thing is the fonts, icons and the inconsistencies of lines (much like that of my stores and prices comparison hehehe). Globe should implement the font they used with their logo on all the site's fonts similar to what Smart Buddy did. Globe's icons aren't standard in terms of resolution and design. They just all look different (refer to Manage Globe Services icons and Barkada News icon). Sorry for the small image but you may check Globe's website at www.globe.com.ph

Smart's website on the other hand still has that "corporate feel" which does not appeal, at least, to me. I'm talking about Smart's ho-hum landing page at www.smart.com.ph. Smart has separate pages for Buddy & Gold's subscribers that is if you look at the right-hand side of the page and click on the teensy-weensy Buddy & Gold's icons will lead you to the page. I think that Smart's page lacks the flashiness of Globe's improved website but the former has icons uniform in size and color and very clean. Smart's website maybe boring but fonts & icons are all consistent and the clean look is easy on the eyes.

By the way, I'm not a website designer and I am a Smart user.

Why Globe Visibility/ Tattoo and Globe Broadband sucks

Don't use Globe Visibility if you don't want headaches!!! Even Globe Broadband!

I subscribed to your 3mbps broadband connection last 4th quarter of the year. To date, the first 15 days was the only satisfying dates we ever had. The rest is history gone bad. Everytime I download a file at night, my internet would be wonky the next day!!! I thought this was an unlimited broadband service? To make matters worst, I don't even reach 1mbps of surfing speeds!!!!

To tell you the truth, I am someone who spends more than 5,000 pesos a month and isn't happy even a bit!

‘Digital robbery’ Telcos face raps over 'vanishing loads'

A CONSUMER watchdog group will file a class action Thursday against major telecommunication companies (telcos) for allegedly "victimizing" the public through "vanishing" cell phone loads and other "scams."

Consumer group Cellphone Owners and Users of the Philippines, Inc. (COUP) accused the country’s three top telcos of "digital robbery" and swindling, asking the NTC to stop what it claimed were illegal activities.

The Cellphone Owners and Users of the Philippines (COUP) represented by human rights lawyer Rod Domingo will file the case against Smart Communications Incorporated, Globe Telecom, and Sun Cellular before the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) at 9 a.m. Thursday.

The group said "digital robbery" nets billions of pesos yearly from more than 60 million subscribers nationwide.

COUP also complained of poor signal "despite [telcos’] advertisements claiming wide network coverage and advanced telecommunication facilities."

“Even just a single centavo illegally collected or charged from each of the unsuspecting subscribers for every call or text message being sent easily translates to millions of pesos illegally collected everyday from the victims of the telcos that have combined revenue of over a billion of pesos daily,” according to the group’s petition.

COUP added that its members were victims of call interruptions or dropped calls but were made to pay for the full charge for each call instead of being billed for each second used.
Domingo said among the issues that will be raised by the complainants are the disappearing loads, false advertisements, dropped calls, spam, unsolicited messages illegally charged against consumers and users, illegal charges of deduction of loads for failed messages, and full charge or load deduction for missed calls and interrupted calls.

Globe Telecom’s Corrupt Tech Support

Let me just rant here for awhile on my frustration with Globe telecom’s annoying broadband service.

The first week of June we had our broadband connection installed in our new apartment. I was excited because this time we had requested an exclusive internet line only because both me and my husband are doing a lot of online work. I had Globe broadband before in my mom’s house and even if there were a lot of problems with the line before, my loyalties were always with them.

I tried to make small talk, asking about the possibility of us using a wireless modem in the future. The installation guy had the nerve to tell me “Pwede ko pong gawin yan Ma’am pero may bayad, kasi po bawal yan sa Globe” (It’s illegal to do that ma’am but i can fix it for you for a fee)

Globe Tattoo vs Smart Bro vs Sun Broadband?

WHICH ONE IS THE BEST? This is the million dollar question of all mobile internet users in the Philippines nowadays :)

Is cost a good measure? Not really. The cost of connection is not a factor since all the 3 networks are offering very comparable rates.

How about speed? All 3 providers are also offering HSDPA, 3G, EDGE, & GPRS connectivity.

So what's the verdict?
- Use Smart Bro when surfing on remote places in the Philippine
- Globe Tattoo is the neutral choice but definitely not the fastest. (Personally, I use Globe tatoo since I can easily use my Globe Post Paid line to add some load to it):)
- It's advisable to use Sun Broadband when you're not too mobile and just surf on coffee shops on key cities in Metro Manila and in the Philippines. If I don't have the convenience of having a Globe Post paid line to reload my Tattoo,I'll definitely go for Sun Broadband. :)

Best Deals Rate Chart of Mobile 3G Internet Providers

So we could better see which 3g internet provider is giving us the best deals, I made this simple chart to compare postpaid and prepaid mobile 3G plans of Globe, Smart and Sun Cellular.

The chart is short and simple — compare rates for prepaid mobile 3g surfing, postpaid plans as well as ongoing bundled promos.

Both Smart and Sun Cellular are running bucket offers — Smart has the Php50 per 5 hours and Php100 per 12 hours promo, while Sun Cellular is offering their SWB at Php100 per 6 hours and Php300 per 24 hours. Globe doesn’t have this kind of bucket plans.

For postpaid, both Globe and Smart offer 60 hours free internet for Php799 a month. However, Sun Cellular is offering unlimited internet for the same monthly rate.
That gives Sun Cellular the cheapest offering at Php1.1 per hour, followed by Smart at Php12.50 then Globe at Php13.30/hour.

Globe moves a step closer to offering broadcast service

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has given the greenlight to Globe Telecom Inc.’s foray into broadcasting with the extension of Altimax Broadcasting Co. Inc.’s permit to rollout multi-channel multipoint distribution system (MMDS) service nationwide.

Altimax is the broadcasting firm recently acquired by Globe Telecom’s Retirement Fund.
The regulator’s approval of Altimax’s provisionary authority (PA) from June 29, 2005 to June 29, 2012 would pave the way for Globe to offer MMDS triple play service. Specifically, the company would offer wireless cable TV, high speed broadband Internet and Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP).

Now that Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile himself has been victimized by that cell phone scam that’s been around for years, I hope that something will finally be done about it. Actually, there’s something more shocking than disappearing prepaid loads—unclear mechanics around the use of Internet accessibility and global roaming through cellular phones. I know quite a number of people who have had to fork over thousands of pesos because they didn’t know—and the service providers conveniently didn’t go out of their way to inform customers—that the service required certain procedures that needed to be complied with to enjoy more reasonable charges.

Growth in mobile “bucket” services seen

More mobile subscribers are opting for unlimited text messaging and voice calls, according to local mobile service provider Smart Communications. Many prepaid subscribers are looking to stretch budget when using mobile services and are willing to pay for a fixed-cost for extended SMS or voice services, citing the success of its previous services, such as the AllText and Call Nyt Long services.

One of the SMART's newer bucket services, allow subscribers to make 24/7 unlimited voice calls for five days or 30 days for only P100 and P500, respectively. As such, the cost per day under this service would be P17 to P20 pesos.

(My comment: But in fine print they tell you that you must maintain 1 peso load balance at all times which means at least an expenditure of 150 pesos monthly additional to maintain a load? And that is only for calls to other SMART or Talk and Text subscribers it doesn't even allow you to call landlines as part of the deal but landline calls are charged expensive call rates)
(And Smart post paid subscribers can not use the 100 peso deal if they are 300 or 500 peso post paid subscriber for calls to SMART and TALK * TEXT. Globe post paid 300 month subscribers can avail of their landline deal for an extra 399 pesos per month. )

(For Globe, the cost of a Duo subscription is PHP 399 a month for landline calls and does not have a unlimited calling to Globe cell phones like Smart offers.)

( But SUN outshines them all with a 150 load card has 4 hours call to other Sun users and unlimited texting to Sun subscribers. )

Menchi Orlina, head of Globe Telecom’s Consumer Broadband Business Group, said Globe expected 2009 to be another exciting year for the telecom industry with the launch of Duo and its worldwide inter-operability for microwave access (wimax), and with the converged service now also available to pre-paid subscribers in Metro Manila and Cebu.

Globe is claiming the patent for Duo, but its rival Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. has introduced its version of the dual service, which involves a second SIM that may be inserted in mobile phones or other wireless handsets to make unlimited landline calls from anywhere in the country.

AS of June 12, the Philippines became the largest WiMax broadband Internet zone in Southeast Asia. Globe Telecom and Intel lit up the large-area wireless broadband for Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao marking the official rollout of WiMax in the Philippines.

Enrile billed for ‘Careless’ download

MANILA, Philippines—Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile claims he doesn’t know the song “Careless Whisper” by Wham! and is perplexed that he was billed for downloading the ring tone and three others into his cell phone for P180.

“I’ve never heard of it,” Enrile said of the song, to laughter at a Senate hearing Tuesday prompted by his complaint that he had lost last month P400 worth of “load” without even touching his phone.

Enrile and Sen. Joker Arroyo scolded NTC Deputy Commissioner Douglas Michael Mallillin for insisting that his agency only had “residual powers” in dealing with telcos and that the telecom industry had been deregulated.

The two senators said that the NTC had the power to set rates that were “reasonable and fair” otherwise it should be abolished.

Fire him!
“My goodness, sir, if you have been in the commission for a long time, I will kick you out if I were the president,” Enrile said. “The way you’re answering, we will recommend that you be fired,” he added.

Arroyo told Mallillin, who had been on the job for just two months, that “the moment you have a franchise, it makes an industry a regulated industry.”
Collusion suspected

Senators were surprised to find out from Mallillin that the NTC and the telecom industry had not disagreed on the rates.

“You mean at no time that NTC and telcos did not disagree? That smacks of ...” Arroyo trailed off.............

Asked by reporters later, Roxas said: “I strongly suspect some collusion and understanding because how else can you explain the lax regulation by NTC.”

HTC Puts New Face on Latest Google Android Phone, Hero

Smartphone developer High Tech Computer (HTC) introduced a completely revamped user interface (UI) on its latest smartphone running Google Android software, the HTC Hero, highlighting the importance companies see in making users love the software on their handset.

HTC's new UI software was designed so people can customize the handset to meet their own needs, from choosing a clock style to putting the most often used functions on the home screen, such as a Wi-Fi switch, weather gauge, or a widget for Twitter feeds or friends' Facebook status . Telcos to get their comeuppance

If there is one Senate investigation that majority of the Filipinos support, it is that on what Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile had called “predatory” practices of telecommunications companies (telcos). For so long, the telcos have abused hapless subscribers, raking in billions in profits in the process. Now, these giants are set to met their comeuppance from determined senators. After years of picking on those not their size, they’ve finally met their match.

If there is no mention of the erring telcos in the leading dailies and television channels, blame it on the clout of the telcos in the advertising world. Truth may be stilled by not mentioning it in print and on the air—but only for a moment, not forever.

Why is a cell phone call from Manila to another cell phone in Mindanao considered a local call, but a cell phone call from Manila to a landline in Manila or vice versa considered a long distance call? Then, why should a call that got cut after a few seconds be billed as a one-minute call? Why are messages received late.
There are about 68 million cell phones in the country today, with about 66 million of them pre-paid. This big number of potential victims is enough reason for the Senate to rein in the bullies among the telcos and give them their comeuppance.

Sun vs Globe

Speaking of cell phone companies, I didn’t realize that Sun is now on the verge of dislodging or have actually dislodged Globe in the postpaid category until I read an article quoting Globe’s new CEO last Monday.
Expressing exasperation about Globe’s market position, Ernest Cu, Globe’s new CEO told Inquirer “Globe’s always number two in everything. Think about where Globe is number one? Even our position in postpaid is now being threatened by Sun.” Cu pointed out incredulously that “they’re supposed to become now the number one postpaid brand and at times, even our main competitor calls us the number three brand, which I kind of resented, actually.”

How come Sun is not trumpeting this achievement? I have never known Mr. John Gokongwei to be the shy type. If this accomplishment is true, it is a strong marketing point to make. There are people who may be attracted to many of Sun’s innovative packages and pricing but are worried that the company itself may not be of the same caliber as Globe or Smart.

Ernest Cu is direct. When asked during an interview with the Inquirer about his plans for Globe Telecom Inc., the company's new president and CEO said what was widely acknowledged but rarely spoken by the firm's officials.

WiMax battle looms in Philippines

Even as Globe made its formal announcement Thursday, main rival Smart Communications held a concurrent press event to disclose it has upgraded its network infrastructure with an HSPA (high-speed packet access) system to enhance its various mobile broadband offerings. At the same time, Smart also revealed it would roll out its own WiMax service, likely to be ready for launch in the fourth quarter of this year.

According to Globe, which is owned by the Zobel de Ayala family and Singapore carrier SingTel, its network is the "first and biggest 2.5 GHz WiMax (802.16e standard-based) broadband network in Southeast Asia".
Globe's WiMax service is available in three monthly postpaid packages: 795 pesos (US$16.5) for 512Kbps data speeds with Internet access only, 995 pesos (US$20.7) for 512Kbps plus landline, and 1,295 pesos (US$26.9) for 1Mbps plus landline.

Santos, however, said this pricing scheme, as well as the cost of its WiMax services, may change in the next few months as the platform becomes more pervasive. The company may also offer a prepaid model, she said. My comment: Prepaid is where the customers are as SMART has already proved! Most (95%) here do not go month to month, but instead buy prepaid cards or loads.

Smart, however, said it prioritized upgrading efforts on its GSM infrastructure because "that's where the critical mass is [right now]". Installed by Ericsson, its HSPA network would also allow Smart to provide faster Internet connection of up to 5.8Mbps per user, the mobile operator said.

Industry observers say the NTC has been slow, if not reluctant, in setting the policy and regulatory framework for WiMax. A telecom executive, who declined to be named, said WiMax could have been deployed earlier if not for the agency's lethargic actions.

Globe's less than exciting WIMAX service

Globe Telecom and Intel have rolled out the first commercial WIMAX service in the Philippines. This is something we have been waiting for, for more than two years. But the application of the WIMAX service is dissapointing.

Unfortuantely, Globe's WIMAX is intended to be used at a fixed point, like Smart Bro... Basically, wireless but not mobile. This still leaves Globe's HSDPA Visibility/Tatoo as the mobile solution.

My comment from Philippine Communication News is that this service seems to be geared to complete against SMART Bro rather than use on cell phones and many high end cell phones have wimax and wifi and this would be a valuable unserved market in contrast to the 3G widgets. Globe should look for the wimax customers who want it on their cell month on a unlimited monthly plan too.

Globe Broadband: Not Worth the Stress Switch or not to switch?

So, what’s the story? Everything is okay until your service goes down. It will take a couple of days and even weeks to get you connected again. If you’re using it for your business, then you’re in deep trouble. If that isn’t enough to stress you out, their level of support isn’t even near what you expect, at a minimum.

Lock-in period? That’s another story to tell by yours truly. (why not offer a one month trial if their service is so great?)

ktd says: Globelines service has not improved one bit, still daily outages and daily disconnects reconnect only to disconnect again, those disconnects pretty much happen every day at around 6pm here in bacolod sometimes lasting hours and hours disconnecting every 30 seconds. Not unusual to have the broadband service work about half the time in a 24 hour period. Stability has been missing for the entire 10 months i have had this service, Calls to the tech support only gets apologies but even if your service starts working again soon after it will break again the next day. Globelines seems to rely on telling their customers that they are doing system restorations but even if true never fixes the problems. There is no way that my 3mb data only dsl will work without disconnects for even 1 day, thats pretty sad when a internet provider can’t deliver 1 day of continuous connection they are paid to provide. Most days have several hours of disconnects and outages the only difference is when and for how long.

30 day trial offer is common if the company feels confident about its product! And only a ID and first month payment should be extended to all their services to avoid long delays in adding customers.

My own experience is that Globe broadband still have regular interruptions which I never find in SMART Bro internet. And it is really annoying that Globe broadband cuts off its signal about every hour and resets ur connection making even Yahoo messenger to resign in. It is very annoying. Why can't they have a stable signal without resetting the connection? And with their increased bandwidth, they should raise the bar on the signal as my signal is usually about 750 kbps when the cap is 1 mbps advertised. My SMART Bro stays around the maximum all the time. I wonder why Globe broadband can't go to the maximum at least sometimes?

And Business customers are offered Business Plan Choose from any of these plans and enjoy a free trial for 30 days:4-Port WiFi Modem, Free, 1 dynamic (with free upgrade to 2 static IP), Free Gadget Tattoo Prepaid or printer, with 1295 plan, Installation Fee across all plans is waived.

Why not make it standard that all broadband customers can request a static ip address, wifi modem, free 30 day trial and upgrade to 1.5 mbps offered to Business customers? They pay the same prices and the general public should be entitled to the same to make more satisfaction.

Globe should have customer satisfaction forms in globe business centers that customers can fill out or email in and online too so senior management can read the reviews on how they are doing and what the customers are saying. Even MVP at PLDT has often responded in email on my concerns in the past making for an excellent feedback mechanism.

And Globe should show how it can use broadband itself by sending statement of bills each month by email to its customers who then can access the bills online and not just the current month (have the last 6 months onlilne) and insisting the customer already know the amount before able to access ! Such a problem that can be so easily solved and make the service useful then. Meralco uses this email service and it is a good reminder and reflects the internet age and saves money in hand delivered bills too.

The Solution – the vanishing and expiring mobile credits

There are only two possible reasons why its happening – wrong billing and unauthorize deduction of mobile credits. Wrong billing and delayed billing are problems of telecommunication companies. They should upgrade their billing system and make it real time. Real time meaning as soon as the credits are used, it should be deducted right away to avoid misunderstanding of charges.

Unauthorize deduction happens when a content provider sends a ringtone or any other services to a subscriber and the subscriber was charged without his/her knowledge. Or an opt-in message was sent and the subscriber accidentally accepted the opt-in.

The solution is simple – prohibit the sending of opt-in messages or messages that invites users to avail of services. Content providers and the telecommunication companies are making a big profit out of this extra services, so why not pay for advertisement? Promote your services via print, television, radio and other media available outside of text messaging. If we probihit the sending of opt-in and ad messages, then we solve the accidental acceptance of the subscriber and no unauthorize charging will happen.

Let us now go to the expiration of mobile credits. According to a comment I got from my CNET Asia blog, Thailand do it this way, which I think can be adopted here in the Philippines. If lets say I bought a P100 pesos load and after the expiration date, I was only able to use only P60 pesos, so that means I still have P40 pesos left. If I didn’t load up, then I won’t be able to use the P40 pesos unused credit. But if in case I bought a new load regardless of the amount (or even a minimum amount of credits), my previous unused P40 pesos should be added to my new load. A win-win solution don’t you think?

I always maintain that mobile credits should not have an expiration date. I bought it already so its mine and nobody should tell me how I should use it and how fast should I use it. But since telecommunication companies are so business-oriented, at least give the consumer a chance to use their unused mobile credits.
Let me tell you a short story, a regular employee came up to me and told me that he just bought 30 pesos load. He was able to send 5 messages from the time he bought it. The next day, much to the surprise of the employee, his entire P 30 pesos load was gone. How do we explain it to this employee that because of a crazy expiration rule or crazy delayed billing system, his hard earned P30 pesos was taken away? You tell me!

Smart gets exclusive; Globe gets first dibs

Smart Communications snagged the exclusive deal with HTC to offer the phone in the Philippines. This deal has a locked-in period of 2 years. Smart Communications will start shipping units of the Android-powered HTC Magic to the local market by the end of the month (end of June 2009 or July 1, 2009).

Since that date is “yet to come”, Globe Telecom was able to start selling the HTC Magic since Friday of last week (June 12, 2009). That means, between June 12 to 30, 2009, Globe can still offer the phone to its subscribers (assuming the official exclusive contract between Smart and HTC starts on July 1).

After that short period, Smart will have exclusive rights to offer the HTC Magic in the Philippines.
Hope this clears up the confusion between the two telcos.

In a filing with the regulator, Jewoo Yeom, MyGame.Ph Inc. vice president, said the company is 100-percent foreign-owned corporation, therefore, “it is not eligible at the very outset to secure VAS registration from NTC because it requires that a VAS provider should at least be 60-percent Filipino-owned.”
Because of this, the company was and continues to be ineligible to register as a VAS provider, Yeom said.
