Telecomm giants work with USAID to prepare Mindanao workforce

Microsoft, Intel, IBM, Globe Telecom, Smart, and We Are IT, Phil. recently signed memoranda of understanding at the Dusit Hotel, Davao in which they agreed to expand collaborative efforts to provide IT training for teachers, discounted software, free internet connections and other services to schools under GEM’s Computer Literacy and Internet Connection (CLIC) project, and its Education Awareness Support Effort (EASE).

The GEM Program said this collaboration has helped to provide about 4,750 internet-connected computers to 800 schools in conflict-affected areas in Mindanao, as well as training for more than 3,900 teachers in IT, benefiting about 600,000 students.

Globe and Smart have pledged to provide selected CLIC schools with free internet service for a year, along with teacher training to ensure that these internet connections are maximized, particularly for classroom work.
